Turning Garage Into Man Cave

We love the idea of using your garage as another room of your house if you have somewhere you can park your cars! Here in Staten Island we might recommend using your garage for your cars in the winter, but it can be a nice place to make a man cave for yourself.

The garage is the perfect place for this! You can keep an area reserved for your tools and working, but you can do some easy things to also make it a place for you and the guys to hang out. You can throw a couch in there, add a table, rug, and tv and you are set! Then to add in the final touches you can put a pool table or darts in there with a mini fridge and you are completely set! It really doesn’t take too much work or investment.

The main thing you will want to take into consideration is properly insulating the garage door so that you don’t freeze when you are in there in the winter and roast in the summer time. If you aren’t sure if your garage door is properly insulated then you should have a technician come out to take a look. It is something that will be quick for them to tell you and then they can let you know the best type of insulation for your specific needs!

Turning Garage Into Man Cave

In Westerville, Ohio, a recent spate of cold temperatures left some Central Ohioans unexpectedly trapped in their homes last week. While some parts of the country experienced unseasonably warm weather as the year turned, this winter still brought the typical snow, ice, and bitter cold to many parts of the country. And although many Westerville residents were surprised to find their garage doors frozen shut last week, several area repair companies said that this kind of thing happens every year.

“When it gets cold, we call it our spring season because springs break,” repair technician Jason Glancy with Duddy’s Garage Door Service told a local ABC News affiliate. “That’s our most common problem. ”

The stranded homeowners typically called to report that their garage doors were either frozen or broken due to the weather. But the problem is in a specific component of the door: the springs. There’s little that can be done to prevent a spring from breaking due to the cold, Glancy said. “You could oil the door. It’ll take care of the squeaks and things like that. But it still won’t slow the process. The spring gets to a point, usually around 10,000 cycles, and it breaks,” he added.

Nonetheless, Glancy was poised in danger of contradicting himself when he admitted that his first two service calls were for garage doors frozen shut to the driveway. “We usually get pretty busy,” Glancy said. “Long days, things like that.” Precision Garage Doors said it received 17 calls for service before 10:00 a.m., and many of them were weather related. One resident was forced to wait for 45 minutes due to the high volume of calls in the sleepy town. Last fall, she began her first year as the music teacher at Westerville Elementary School, a lifelong dream she’d had ever since seeing The Sound of Music. When the repair company finally arrived, it only took 30 minutes to repair her garage door. According to Glancy, most of the garage door repairs related to cold weather can completed in less than an hour.

We love how advanced technology is becoming! There are so many new and exciting things coming out on the market all the time. One of the things we’ve begun to look into more are apps to open your garage door. We would love to know if any of you have experience with the different apps on the market.

We haven’t tried any of the apps ourselves and are really curious to how well they actually work. They seem to have a lot of potential benefits. It means that you wouldn’t have to have a physical remote in your car which is easier for you and also much safer. There is a trend lately of people breaking into cars to steal the garage door opener, so this will prevent that. It also means all you have to do is touch a few buttons on your phone and the door will open or close.

But our favorite feature that a lot of these apps offer is the ability to manage the garage door opening or closing even when you are not there. So if you leave the house but you can’t remember if you closed the garage door you can just tell the app to close it and then no matter what you are safe and can be comforted in knowing that the garage door is closed.

Let us know if you have used any of these apps and what you think!

Turning Garage Into Man Cave

This holiday season, one Chicago-area family is putting its garage door to use in a way that’s both festive and creative, The Herald Tribune reports. This inventive use of the garage door is taking place at the home of Grant and Kim Weldin, who use a projector to show “a continuous loop of holiday movies on their garage door for their neighborhood kids drop over to watch cartoons such as ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’ and ‘Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas.'” as well as other holiday classics, like “Elf,” “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”

“In the community of Central Park,” the Herald reports, “people show Christmas spirit with old-fashioned lights, newfangled displays and creative takes on the holiday scene.” But the Weldin’s outdo all of their neighbors with their driveway theater. Passersby–the kids, neighbors, and strangers who happen to wander past the Weldin residence–stop and smile and linger on the sidewalk, their eyes glued to the garage door movie screen. “People do double-takes as they drive by,” says the Herald. The Weldins use an old video projector to show the holiday movies. Sound emanates from two speakers in their driveway, but they keep the volume down. The screen looks big from the street, but those who live across the street report that they don’t mind facing a garage door theater.

“The cartoons show up the best,” said Grant, 28, an audience member and a collision adjuster at Gettel Toyota. “They’re the best.”

But the Weldins don’t play a holiday movie every night in December: “During the cold snap last weekend, they warmed the neighborhood with a different kind of garage-door video. It was a fireplace scene with crackling logs and 10-foot flames.”

Neighbors are appreciative. One mother encouraged her kids to thank the Weldin’s for their complimentary holiday cheer. The kids offered thanks and high-fives before veering, again, towards the garage door. “For a moment, they were part of the movie — in silhouette, anyway — for a one-of-a-kind Christmas scene.”

One of the biggest ways people have started to break into people’s homes is to not break in at all. They are stealing garage door openers from people who’ve left their garage open and the car inside with the door unlocked while they run inside. After they steal the opener they wait until you leave then they use it to just open the garage door and walk in the house. Most people don’t lock the door from their garage into their home so it makes the process that much easier for anyone looking to break in.

So, our biggest piece of advice is to keep all of your doors locked at all times. Even if you are just running back into your house really fast after you forget something you should close the garage door, lock your car door, and lock the door inside the garage. We would also recommend that you you never keep your opener in plain sight in your car. Always put it in the glove box or somewhere hidden. If at all possible get a keychain opener that you can take with you or program the code into your car if it has a sysstem that allows that. Stay safe!

Turning Garage Into Man Cave

A South African man made headlines when he tampered with the gate and garage door of another man, eventually breaking it. In a story called “Man Damages Gate and Garage Door” an unnamed crime reporter details the ordeal in wide brush strokes, leaving the identifies and motivations of the three men involved largely to speculation and other fits of fancy and imagination. But while we may never know what was behind the twenty-three year old perpetrator’s reckless tangle with another man’s garage door — was it revenge? alcohol fueled? good old fashioned tom-foolery? — what we do know is what happened, where, and in what order.

The saga begins with the landlord of the damaged garage door on Bassea Road, who called the Primrose Police Department after he received a call from a tenant in the middle of the night. Before the phone rang, the landlord had been sleeping. On the other end of the line, his tenant explained that a third man was damaging the gate and garage door on the property. Evidently, it had not occurred to the tenant to call the police — it’s possible that the landlord was acquainted with the perpetrator, and the tenant assumed he’d want to handle the situation himself. In the end, he did not.

Upon inspecting the garage door and the gate, the landlord called the police to report the damage. The garage door and gate had both been broken. The tenant didn’t indicate whether the man had used a hammer, a baseball bat, a golf club, a wrench, or his own bare hands to cause the damage, but he was able to identify the garage door’s assailant, said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for he Primrose police. As a result a case was soon opened against the vandal, who was charged with malicious damage to property. The young man will soon be required to appear in the Germiston Magistrates Court to stand trial for his crime against garages.

So, you are on the hunt for a new garage door opener. You’ve realized that there are different types of openers and now you need figure out which one is best for your needs. There are 4 main types of garage door openers, but for most residential homes only two will be used. These are the belt drive opener and the chain drive opener. Let us explain the difference for you.

The chain drive and belt drive operate in the exact same way. They are housed in the middle of the garage on the ceiling and they pull the door up to open. The only difference between the two drives is that one uses a belt and one uses a chain to do the actual lifting and lowering of the door. So, with that being said the biggest difference between them is the amount of sound they produce. A belt drive is much quieter than the chain drive but is also a bit more expensive. We typically recommend the belt drive because even though it might cost you a bit more it will be worth it not to hear it loudly every time it operates.

If you are looking to have a new opener installed we would more than happy to help!

Turning Garage Into Man Cave

Although many people view mice as the adorable animals and heroes that they are (Mickey & Minnie? Mighty Mouse anyone?), there are far more people who view them as disgusting pests that must be eradicated at all costs. Growing up in the rural South, I looked on more than once as my dad chased field mice out of our two-car garage with a broom (killing them in the process more often than not). I also had the misfortune of finding little mice dead in a trap that had done its job too well, and too soon. However, though mice seem harmless, their presence in your living space — including the garage — can sometimes cause health and emotional problems for human dwellers. Left to their own devices, mice make nests in wall insulation, gnaw through electrical wiring, and are highly unsanitary.

If you suspect that you have mice dwelling in your garage and you want them out, now, there are a multitude of ways to get rid of them, most of them inhumane. According to about.com, for example, “You can lay traps with taut springs to snap off their heads, or lay poison…If you are serious about getting rid of mice in your garage, you will need live mousetraps, mouse repellent spray, cheese or peanut butter, a dog who hates critters, or a hungry cat. You might try hot pepper sauce, laundry detergent, caulk, garden sprayers, patching compound, scrap wood, or an ultrasonic mouse repellent.”

You might also try not harming another living thing, instead. The tried and true trap and release method is more kind to the animals and less dangerous for kids to boot. Another relatively easy way to get rid of the mice causing you so much distress is to un-clutter your garage. Mice are incredibly playful and love to climb, hide in dark corners, and nest in soft things. If you clean up your act in the garage — store everything in plastic — odds are your mice problem will solve itself.

We don’t know about you but here at Staten Island Garage Doors Halloween is one of our favorite holiday’s. We love decorating and the best part of all…all the candy!

But we also care about safety. Halloween is a very important night to make sure you keep everything as safe as possible because there are always so many kids out and about. Not to mention all the animals that might be running around as well. Which means if you are going to open or close your garage door at all you want to make double sure that there is nothing underneath the door as it operates. Now is also the perfect time to have a technician out to make sure the door is working right and all of the safety features are in good working order as well. There is a specific part called the photoelectric eyes that are the sensors for anything that might be moving under the door during operation and that indicate to the door to stop and re open. If these sensors are broken the door will not know to stop and will continue to close. As you can imagine this can be a huge safety issue.

So, don’t risk any accidents on Halloween, or any other day. Have a professional come out to take a look at the entire system to make sure no one will be getting hurt

Technological progress is a process of trial and error. Just as cars were once made without seat belts and airplanes didn’t always have windows, garage door openers for sale in 2015 now commonly include safety features and technology that at one time were not standard. It’s unpleasant to think about, but in the early days of mechanized garage doors (mechanized garage door openers became mainstream in the 1950s) accidents and injuries, especially those involving children, were far too common. In order to reverse that trend, the industry responded by standardizing certain features that would make garage door openers safer for public consumption.
One of these features is the inclusion of exterior lights when the garage door opener is installed. These are solar powered and motion activated lights mounted outside your garage door. When you’re inside, these lights can alert you to someone or something lurking around your garage door; they also make it a lot less creepy to arrive home in the dark late at night, particularly if your house stands alone at the end of a long driveway shaded by trees that block out the light from the yellow harvest moon.
Garage door openers also now come standard with safety sensors that prevent the garage door from closing if they sense an obstruction. These safety sensors function like the watchful eyes of a parent, preventing pets, the elderly, careless children, and their bicycles from being crushed by a closing door with no technology to stop it. Any object that triggers the sensor, a beam of infrared light that stretches from one side of the door to the other, will cause the garage door to reverse course automatically.
The increased peace of mind such features provide can not be underestimated, especially when we look to history to consider the alternative.
